Prices opened for Jebel Aliphase 2

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) opened bids on 30 November for phase 2 of the Jebel Alipower and desalination complex. Six international contractors are competing for the project, which calls for the installation of 1,200 MW of generating capacity and 55 million gallons a day of desalination (MEED 9:7:04).

Bidders had the option of submitting separate bids for the power and desalination packages, as well as an overall bid. Only two of the bidders, Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction Companyand Hyundai Heavy Industries - both of South Korea, submitted prices for both packages.

Three Korean contractors priced the power island lump-sum turnkey (LSTK) contract. According to the unevaluated results posted by DEWA, Hyundai Engineering & Constructionis the low bidder for the definite works with a price after discount of AED 2,415 million ($658 million). For the desalination package, Italy's Fisia Italimpiantiis the clear low bidder with a price of AED 904 million ($246 million).

DEWA is expected to award the work in the first quarter of 2005.
