Progress made on Alba potlines

Bechtel of the US has shortlisted the local AA Nass Groupand Cyprus-based GP Zachariades (GPZ - Overseas)for the civil works foundations package on the fifth potline expansion of Aluminium Bahrain (Alba). Both companies are understood to have submitted prices between BD 5 million-6 million ($13 million-15 million) based on a number of options. Four other contractors quoted in early March for the work.

The bid deadline for the associated structural steel supply and erection contract on the main building that will house potlines 9 and 10 has been extended to 6 April. The prospective bidders are AA Nass, Ahmed Mansour al-A'Aliand Haji Hassan Group- all local, Zamil Steel Industriesof Saudi Arabia and Jebel Ali-based Cleveland Bridge & Engineering Middle East(MEED 7:3:03).

Bechtel, which is the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor, has also issued a tender for associated anode facilities. Contractors have until 20 April to bid for the package, which entails building an anode furnace block house and storage area. Total project costs for the Alba expansion are estimated at $1,700 million.
