Q-Tel to expand its network

14 August 2003
Qatar Telecom( Q-Tel), the state-owned telecoms company, is to spend QR 400 million ($109.9 million) on projects to expand its GSM network in the country, it announced on 14 August. The schemes, which will start in the fourth quarter of the financial year, will be completed in 18 to 24 months, said Ross Cormack, executive director of wireless services.

The upgrade project will be the fourth of its kind, and is expected to be carried out by Alcatel and Motorola, he said.

Q-Telexpects that capacity will increase to 425,000 lines by the end of the year from 370,000 at present. The company will continue to upgrade the network, Cormack said, to ensure 30 per cent of the system's line capacity is maintained free as a 'buffer zone'. This will be used to ensure the system is not overloaded (MEED 1:8:03).
