The production of the first metal from Qatalum’s $5.7bn aluminium smelter marked the start of a new chapter in Qatar’s diversification drive. Since the early 1970s, the gas-rich nation has been expanding its manufacturing capabilities, beginning with fertilisers, petrochemicals and steel. And now the country has another product that can bear the stamp ‘made in Qatar’.
