Qatar-Bahrain causeway gets the go-ahead

07 May 2004
Final approval was given by Doha and Manama in late April for the Qatar-Bahrain causeway project. A joint technical committee is drawing up prequalification documents, expected to be released by the end of May, for an international design and supervision consultant. There are also plans to invite companies to prequalify for a project management consultancy role.

The estimated $2,000 million project has been on hold since 2002 following the completion of technical studies by a consortium led by Denmark's COWI, but returned to the agenda when Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa and Qatari Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa al-Thani agreed to re-establish the Bahrain-Qatar High Commission in December 2003.

Technically highly complex, the 22-kilometre causeway will comprise some 18 kilometres of marine works and embankments. The bridge will run from the west coast of Qatar, close to Zubarah fortress, to eastern Bahrain, south of Manama.

The project is likely to attract funding from regional aid agencies (MEED 12:3:04).
