Qatar extends Mesaieed gas pipelines tender by two weeks

18 March 2010

$80m Qatar Petroleum deal to back up gas supplies to Qatalum and Mesaieed Power Corporation

Qatar Petroleum (QP) has extended the bid submission deadline for the estimated $80m deal to build back up gas pipelines to Mesaieed Industrial Area by two weeks to 28 March.

Bids for the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) deal were due to be submitted by 14 March, but state-controlled QP decided to push back the deadline for undisclosed reasons.

Firms prequalified to bid for the deal include:

  • Black Cat Construction (Qatar)
  • Consolidated Contractors Company (Athens-based)
  • Dodsal (India)
  • Doha Petroleum Construction Compnay (Qatar)
  • Fernas Construction Company (Turkey)
  • Galfar Al-Misnad Engineering & Contracting (Qatar)
  • Larsen & Toubro (India)
  • Panorama Engineering (Qatar)
  • Punj Lloyd (India)
  • Tekfen Construction (Turkey)

The winning firm will build a 36-inch pipeline to act as a back-up for supplies of gas to state-aluminium producer Qatalum and Mesaieed Power Corporation.

Natural gas is currently supplied by QP through a pipeline under the Consolidated Gas Supply Pipeline project. The back-up line will run from station 72-SBV-41J to station-SR-2.

The project which is expected to be completed in 2012 is intended to improve the reliability and availability of gas supplies to the plants.

In February, QP asked contractors to resubmit prices for the contract to upgrade the company’s gas facilities at Dukhan and Mesaieed, which could be worth up to $1bn (MEED 10:2:10).

The Mesaieed portion of the contract covers the construction of a new acid gas removal unit, an amine-sweetening plant, rehabilitation of the sulphur recovery unit, and the supply and installation of compressors and a flared gas system.

The plant will process about 750 million cubic feet a day (cf/d) of gas, primarily to supply local petrochemical and power plants.
