Partnership to focus on solar power applications in Qatar before looking at opportunities abroad
Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC) has signed a memorandum of understanding with Qatar Solar Technologies (QSTec) to jointly study potential solar power projects in Qatar and beyond.
QSTec is a joint venture between the state-run Qatar Solar, Germany’s SolarWorld and Qatar Development Bank. The joint venture will initially focus on solar power applications in Qatar, but will be extended to other projects around the world at a later date.
QSTec’s US$1bn manufacturing plant, located in Ras Laffan Industrial City, will initially produce 8,000 metric tonnes per year of polysilicon. Once this is transformed into solar modules, they will capture enough solar energy to power around 240,000 homes for a year.
