22 July 2013

Expressway programme includes 42 major construction packages

Qatar’s Public Works Authority (Ashghal) has reopened the prequalification process for its multibillion-dollar expressway programme.

Contractor, not currently prequalified, have until 27 October to submit prequalification documents for the expressway programme, which will involve the tendering of 42 major construction packages until 2018.

The original prequalification list for the expressway projects was drawn up in 2011, and this is the second time that Ashghal has invited more companies to prequalify for the programme.

Ashghal is planning to spend QR100bn ($27.5bn) in the years up until 2018 in this period to upgrade the country’s roads and drainage infrastructure. The US’ KBR was appointed by Ashghal as the programme manager to oversee its major highway projects in February 2011.

In June, Ashghal awarded a number of major construction contracts as part of its expressway programme. Two of the contracts were construction packages for the East-West Corridor. Package one, worth $458m, was awarded to Greece’s J&P Avax, while China Harbour Engineering Design & Construction won the second package valued at $612.5m.

Also in June, US-based Aecom was awarded a $148m three-year contract to provide construction supervision and design review services on a section of the Doha Expressway. The section of the new dual highway will connect the cities of Al-Khor and Messaieed, covering 170 kilometres of expressway. The highway will play a key role in supporting the movement of sea freight in and out of the New Doha Port.
