Qatar seeks bidders for two new power and water projects

23 June 2013

Projects include first independent power scheme since 2008

The Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) is seeking expressions of interest (EOI) for two schemes, including the first new independent water and power project (IWPP) in the country since 2008.

The IWPP, being built south of Doha near Mesaieed, will have a power capacity of 2,000MW and a desalination capacity of 90 million imperial gallons a day (MIGD).The other project is a 45MIGD desalination plant at Ras Laffan, north of Doha. The latter plant will be used for industrial purposes and will include an expansion option that would double its capacity.

Potential bidders are invited to respond to the EOI by 24 June. Both projects will require commercial funding. The last power scheme in Qatar was the $3.5bn Ras laffan C project, which reached financial close in August 2008 and was completed in mid-2011.

Accountancy firm PricewaterhouseCoopers is understood to be financial adviser to Kahramaa on the Ras Laffan project, but no one has yet been appointed to advise on the Mesaieed scheme.

Kahramaa’s last project was the $500m Ras Abu Fontas A2 desalination plant, which is being developed by the local Qatar Electricity & Water Company (QEWC).
