Qatar sets up railway development committee

Emiri Decree No 36 for 2011 sets out railway committee

Qatar has issued an Emiri Decree to set up a committee to supervise Qatar’s QR130bn ($35bn) railway programme.

Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad al-Thani, heir apparent, issued decree No 36 for 2011.

Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Hamad bin Jassem bin Jabor al-Thani will be chairman of the committee and will be responsible for appointing a secretary general.

Other committee members include Sheikh Abulrahman bin Khalifa al-Thani, Municipality and Urban Planning Minister, Nasir Ali al-Mulawi, Head of the Public Works Authority (Ashghal), Ali Abdullah al-Abdullah, assistant undersecretary of the Municipality and Urban Planning Ministry, Abdullah al-Subaie, managing director of Qatar Railways Company, as well as other members of the ministries of economy and finance.

The committee will prepare the study and technical specifications of the railway projects and will be responsible for inviting tenders for the projects. It will sign contracts to develop the projects and follow up its implementations.

The committee will operate and manage the railways and will also be responsible for the maintenance, safety and security of the projects. The committee will fix the service charges of the railway and take care of it.
