Malaysia’s Petronas will receive 1.5m tonnes a year from 2013
Qatargas has signed a heads of agreement to supply Malaysia’s state-owned energy company Petroliam Nasional Berhad (Petronas) with liquefied natural gas (LNG).
Under the terms of the agreement, Qatargas will deliver 1.5m tonnes a year (t/y) of LNG to Petronas over a 20-year period, beginning in 2013.
According to Qatargas, this amounts to about 5 per cent of Malaysia’s current gas needs.
“It is the first time Qatargas has signed a heads of agreement for supplying LNG to the South East Asian market. We are very pleased with this achievement as it represents the first long-term agreement for supplying LNG to one of the world’s fastest-growing LNG markets,” said Khalid bin Khalifa al-Thani, chief executive of Qatargas.
