Facility increases output to 36 million tonnes a year
Qatar’s Ras Laffan Liquefied Natural Gas Company (RasGas) has started producing liquefied natural gas (LNG) from its seventh gas train, boosting the company’s overall output to approximately 36.3 million tonnes a year (t/y).
The new facility is capable of producing 7.8 million t/y of LNG.
The $4bn onshore engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract to build trains 6 and 7 was awarded to a joint venture of Japan’s Chiyoda Corporation and France’s Technip in 2005.
RasGas is a joint venture of state-run Qatar Petroleum (QP) with a 70 per cent stake and the US’ ExxonMobil Corporation with 30 per cent.
In 2005, Doha embarked on an aggressive programme to become the world’s largest exporter of LNG. The country remains on target to raise its production to 77 million t/y by 2011.
