QF lets packages

The Qatar Foundation for Education, Science, & Community Development (QF) has awarded contracts, totalling an estimated $180 million, for the construction of a major accommodation complex at Education City. A joint venture of the local Darwish Engineeringand US-based Contrack Internationalhas won the lot 1 contract, valued at an estimated $77 million, while a local joint venture of Midmac Contractingand Contracohas taken the lot 2 package, worth just over $100 million. Further construction packages are due to be tendered on the Education City development, which is being handled by Qatar Petroleum (QP)on behalf of QF (MEED 6:8:04).

Both contracts are scheduled to take about 16 months to complete. Lot 1 covers the construction of accommodation units, with a built-up area of 60,000 square metres, and associated infrastructure. Lot 2 is for about 85,000 square metres of accommodation, again with associated infrastructure. Two other groups were bidding for the project, which covers about 600 residential units.

Tendering is awaited on two more packages at Education City. Selected contractors were invited in late October to express their interest in bidding for the construction of the Texas A&M College of Engineering. With a gross area of 53,000 square metres, the college will comprise laboratories, classrooms, lecture halls, a library and parking and will be located to the south of the Education City development.

Bidding is also awaited on the convention centre package, for which prequalification of contractors was launched in the summer.

The project manager on the Education City development is the local office of KEO International Consultants.
