RAM to take majority stake in Air Mauritanie

29 August 2006

Flag carrier Royal Air Maroc (RAM) has agreed to take a 51 per cent stake in Mauritanian flag carrier Air Mauritanie. The terms of the acquisition will be finalised at a meeting in Nouakchott on 1 September.

The two carriers agreed to increase economic and technical co-operation and to promote the development of air links between the two countries. The acquisition is part of RAM's broader strategy to take stakes in northwest African carriers. The airline already has stakes in airlines in Senegal and Gabon as well as South Africa.

During the discussions, the two countries also agreed to co-operate on other sea, road and air transport projects, and Rabat confirmed its intention to participate in the construction of a bridge across the Senegal river at Rosso.

The bridge is part of the Nouakchott-Nouadhibou road project in Mauritania, itself part of a larger scheme to build a road link between Morocco and Senegal.
