Ras al-Zour port PQs in

02 June 2006

Saudi Arabian Mining Company (Maaden) has received prequalification applications for the construction of a new port to serve Ras al-Zour industrial zone in the Eastern Province. The facility will initially be built to import bauxite, process chemicals and other equipment required for the company's proposed aluminium smelter.

The scope of works comprises the dredging of a channel with a depth of 15 metres as well as the port basin. The berthing facilities will be able to handle vessels of up to 70,000 dwt.

The port will eventually be upgraded to export alumina, aluminium and other mineral products emanating from Maaden projects.

A separate operator will be selected to manage the port. Worley Arabia is the consultant.
