Rebid for airport upgrade

21 January 2005
The General Establishment for Civil Aviation (GECA) will reannounce a tender by late January for the contract to modernise airport buildings at Al-Mazzeh, near Damascus. GECA planning director Bassam Saker said in mid-January that the tender will be reissued by the end of the month, after which the organisation will review the bids over a 50-day period.

Both local and international contractors will be invited to participate, Saker said, whereas the previous tender was only open to local firms and did not receive any interest.

The contract involves the preparation, design, and construction of the Al-Mazzeh airport buildings. It is part of the Transport Ministry's plan to develop and expand the airport to serve the new joint venture airline of Syrian Arab Airlines (SAA) and Lebanon's Middle East Airlines (MEA - MEED 30:7:04).

GECA has also indicated that tenders will be issued imminently for the construction of new airports at Al-Raqqa and Hasakeh, following the cancellation of the original tenders. A Turkish company is understood to be in the final stages of conducting a report on the modernisation of Homs airport.
