Reformists denounce judges

28 October 2003
A parliamentary commission dominated by reformists on 28 October called for an inquiry into the role of the prosecutor in the case of murdered Iranian-Canadian photographer Zahra Kazemi. The move came after a report, published by the Article 90 Commission, which deals with press freedom in the country, cited irregularities and abuses by the state prosecutor, Judge Saeed Mortazavi. The report also accused Mortazavi of tampering with evidence and subverting the course of the investigation.

President Khatami on 8 October publicly criticised proceedings at the trial of Reza Ahmedi, who is accused of the murder of Kazemi. The hardline judiciary and the reformist Intelligence Ministry became embroiled in an argument on 7 October at the trial when both sides accused the other of a cover up after the death of Kazemi (MEED 8:10:03).
