Riyadh foils terror attack

26 November 2003
Security forces in Riyadh on 25 November foiled a terrorist attack on the kingdom, announced the Interior Ministry. The news came after a shootout between government forces and suspected militants in the northeast of the capital, during which two suspected militants were killed. 'The security forces were able to disrupt this terror plot by clashing with the terrorists and flushing them out of their dens, which resulted in the death of two of them and the seizure of a car bomb which was ready to be detonated,' said a statement from the Interior Ministry. The incident happened on the first day of celebrations of Eid al-Fitr.

In Washington, the Saudi ambassador to the US Prince Bandar bin Sultan condemned extremists and said there is no safe place for Al-Qaeda in the kingdom. 'We are hunting down the terrorists and flushing them from their hiding places...God willing, we will continue to find them and bring them to harsh justice,' he said in a statement. 'Their aim is to take away our security and take over the state. Instead of progress and reform, they want to turn Saudi Arabia into a Taliban society... they will not succeed.' (MEED 14:11:03)
