Riyadh receives interest for metro contract

176km metro expected to be completed in 2019

Saudi Arabia’s Arriyadh Development Authority (ADA) has received expressions of interest from multiple firms for the operations and management (O&M) project management services (PMS) package of the $23bn Riyadh Metro.

The sought firm will project-manage the O&M contractors for the Riyadh Metro, which is expected to be completed in 2019. The client has already began the procurement processes for O&M packages, and received offers from bidders in December last year.

The ADA has said it intends to appoint multiple O&M contractors for the Riyadh Metro scheme, which comprises six lines that will extend over 176 kilometres and will include 85 stations. Each of the O&M contracts will last for a period of 10 years.

Companies that were prequalified to bid for the O&M packages include: SMRT (Singapore), Serco (UK), Korail (South Korea), RATP (France), Keolis (France), Ansaldo / Hitachi (Italy/Japan) and QDVC (Qatar).

The metro will be complemented by a 1,2000km bus rapid transit (BRT) network, which is also expected to be completed in 2019.

A rapidly rising population underpins Riyadh’s public transport system masterplan. The city’s population is expected to rise from the current 6.5 million to 8.3 million in 2030.
