Sabic’s JV chemical project in Saudi Arabia begins operating

Saudi industrial major’s joint project in Al-Khobar with Japan’s Mitsubishi comprises two chemical plants

The Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) has announced the completion of the pilot operation of its Methyl Methacrylate Monomer (MMA) and Poly Methyl Methacrylate (PMMA) plants in Saudi Arabia and the commencement of commercial operations.

The plants have been established in Al-Khobar by Sabic and Japan’s Mitsubishi Chemical Corporation in a 50:50 joint venture (JV).

Work on the project began in June 2014. The partners have invested $360m in the venture.

The MMA plant has a capacity of 250,000 metric tonnes per annum (mta), while the PMMA plant has a 40,000 mta.

The petrochemical products produced by the plants will be used in industrial sectors in the kingdom including construction, automotive, electronics, and medical technologies.
