Three international gas turbine manufacturers have been prequalified by Saudi Petrochemical Company (Sadaf) for a contract to provide generating capacity for a new captive power plant at its styrene monomer-2 plant in the Eastern Province. The companies are Westinghouse Electric Corporation and General Electric Company, both of the US, and Japan's Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MEED 17:3:00).

Six companies have been invited to submit construction bids for the 150- 200-MW co-generation unit on a build-own-operate (BOO) basis: Enron Corporation and CMS Energy Corporation, both of the US, Belgium's Tractebel, Italy's Enelpower, France's Trindel and the local National Contracting Company (NCC). Bids for the estimated $120-150 million project are expected by 1 August. The unit is to supply the styrene monomer plant with steam, besides providing power for the company's internal use.
