A European envoy to Yemen has indicated that President Ali Abdullah Saleh is making moves to hand over power
Fierce fighting in Taiz, Yemen’s third biggest city, broke out on 2 November killing at least four people.
The fighting, between government troops and dissident army units, took place in the city centre.
The European envoy to Yemen indicated that President Ali Abdullah Saleh has moved a step closer to handing over power to his deputy by accepting a UN solution to ease a transition.
The UN Security Council has been urging Saleh to step down in exchange for immunity from prosecution. Saleh has repeatedly promised to hand over power since returning from Saudi Arabia in September, where he was recovering from injuries sustained in an attack on his Sanaa compound in June.
