Saleh leaves for Riyadh talks

17 February 2004
Yemeni President Saleh on 17 February travelled to Riyadh for talks with Crown Prince Abdullah bin Abdulaziz. A Yemeni official says Saleh hopes to settle a dispute over a wall that Sanaa has accused the Saudis of building along their common border.

Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Kurbi said issues to be discussed include 'the affair about the barriers recently put up on the border and security questions'.

Yemen has accused Saudi Arabia of erecting a security wall and claiming territory defined in a border agreement as 'common pasture' for tribal herdsmen from both countries. Riyadh has dismissed the suggestions of a barrier. It describes the wall as nothing more than sand.
