Sanaa rings the changes

20 August 2004
China's Huawei Technologieshas been appointed technology supplier to state-owned monopoly fixed-line operator TeleYemenfor the upgrade of its existing analogue wireless network to the US' code division multiple access (CDMA) system. The work will be carried out in three phases and the final value of the contract is expected to be finalised in early September. TeleYemen withdrew from the government's process of auctioning a third GSM licence in favour of the upgrade earlier in the year. Sanaa plans to issue a public tender for the third licence in September.

'The award of the TeleYemen contract to Huawei generated widespread confusion and many reports that an unidentified Chinese firm was going to be picked for the third licence without open bidding,' says a government official involved in the process. 'However, this is not the case.'

The other two mobile operators in the country are Sabaphoneand Spacetel Yemen. Their exclusivity rights expired in mid-August (MEED 18:6:04).
