Saudi Arabia has promised Yemen $10bn to help with the reconstruction of the areas retaken from Houthi rebels, according to a statement carried by Yemen’s state news agency Saba.

Saba quoted Yemen’s president Abed al-Hadi saying “[The $10bn] is for the reconstruction of liberated provinces, including $2bn as a deposit in the central bank to shore up the Yemeni riyal.”

The president, who is currently based in the government’s temporary southern capital of Aden, called on his government to focus on power, water, roads, healthcare and education in retaken areas.

The Saudi-led coalition has been fighting Houthi rebels and forces loyal to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh since March 2015 to try to restore the power of President al-Hadi.
