Saudi Electricity Company has signed a $1.8bn contract for the conversion of the Qurayyah power plant with a consortium of the local Arabian Bemco Contracting and South Korea’s Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction.

The consortium will convert the simple cycle power plant to a combined cycle configuration by adding five steam turbines and 15 heat recovery steam generators, raising the capacity of the plant by 1,300MW.

This will bring the total capacity of the plant to 3,200MW. The first phase of the project is due to be completed by early summer 2014. Full capacity is scheduled to come on line in early 2015.

Bemco won the SR2.1bn ($560m) contract for the construction of the simple-cycle plant in June 2007.
