In a tangible display of popular support for the suffering of Palestinians, Saudis gave more than $160 million in charity through a telethon aired between 11 and 14 April. The campaign was organised by a committee in support of the intifada headed by Interior Minister Prince Nayef. The committee had already raised nearly $70 million through other fund-raising activities since the intifada began in autumn 2000.
Gifts were made in both cash donations and expensive items such as jewellery and cars that can be auctioned later. A number of banks and businesses contributed by giving an amount equivalent to one day's salary for all their employees. King Fahd made a donation of $5.3 million. More donations to the committee can be made at any bank in the kingdom.
