Sawiris relinquishes role as chairman of Mobinil

26 August 2008
Naguib Sawiris has relinquished his position as chairman of Mobinil, the Egyptian mobile phone operator that is 34.6 per cent owned by the Sawiris-dominated Orascom Telecom.

Mobinil's current chief executive officer (CEO) Alex Shalaby will replace Naguib Sawiris as chairman on 1 September.

The position of CEO will go to Hassan Kabbani, the CEO of Orascom Telecom's Algerian subsidiary Djezzy.

Kabbani has run Djezzy since October 2003, maintaining the operator's dominant share of the mobile market in the face of increased competition from Algerie Telecom's Mobilis and Nedjma, an operator controlled by Qatar's Qtel.

Orascom Telecom's CEO Tamer el-Mahdy, will take over from Kabbani in Algiers.

The management restructure is the largest since the then Mobinil CEO Osman Sultan left to set up UAE telecoms firm Du in late 2006.
