Second package awarded on Islamic museum

A joint venture of the local Midmac Contractingand Belgium's Six Constructwas awarded in late October the second package on the Museum of Islamic Arts project. Worth $17.5 million, the 13-month contract involves the creation of a platform, on which the landmark building will be located, piling and reclamation (MEED 5:9:03).

The joint venture submitted the lowest main quote for the package when bids were opened in late August by the Central Tenders Committee (CTC). The other main competitor for the contract was Kuwait's Gulf Dredging & Contracting Company.

Bidding is already under way on package three, which covers the foundations, structure and finishings on the project. About 15 contractors are prequalified to bid by 17 November for the 21-month contract.

The striking five-storey building will be located opposite the Finance Ministry on the corniche. IM Pei Architectsof the US is the design consultant, while the construction manager is the US' Turner International. The client is Qatar Petroleum.
