Seven injured at Joseph's Tomb

12 December 2003
Militant Palestinian groups, Islamic Jihad and the Al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigade, on 12 December both claimed responsibility for an attack on seven Israeli pilgrims at Joseph's Tomb in the West Bank city of Nablus, local radio reported. 'This attack was a rapid answer to the massacre of our martyrs in the Rafah refugee camp,' said a statement received by AFP, referring to the six Palestinians killed during an Israeli incursion in the Rafah refugee camp the previous day. All of the injured pilgrims, two of whom were seriously wounded, were evacuated from the scene by the Israeli military.

The attack came hours after Palestinian Prime Minister Ahmed Qurei (Abu Ala) said that the continued building of the controversial 'security fence' in the Occupied Territories would 'kill' the internationally-sponsored peace roadmap. Despite Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's claims in early December that he will dismantle a number of settlements, he says that the barrier is a non-negotiable issue.
