Shaw wins Ruwais refinery tech deal

31 August 2008

The US’ Shaw Group has won the contract to provide its proprietary technology for the world’s largest residue fluid catalytic cracking unit at the grassroots expansion of the Ruwais refinery planned by Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer).

Shaw, along with its French technology partners Axens and Total, will also carry out basic engineering on the 127,000-barrel-a-day (b/d) unit, which will allow for integration with a petrochemicals complex.

In addition, Shaw will provide engineering services to integrate and coordinate 11 new process units from other licensors at the site.

Axens will also supply its proprietary technology for the 60,000-b/d unsaturated liquefied petroleum gas unit, the 26,000-b/d C4 cut purification system, the 26,000-b/d butane isomerisation plant and the 41,000-b/d naphtha hydrotreater.

The project manager on the 400,000-b/d project is the US’ Fluor Corporation. Bechtel of the US is the front-end engineering and design contractor (MEED 21:1:08).

Tendering for the engineering, procurement and construction element is due to start soon.
