Shuaibah water project awards coming soon

27 January 2006
The Royal Court is understood to be close to approving the giant western water transmission system project. A final decision on the conveyor scheme, which will distribute water produced at the existing Shuaibah desalination complex and the planned Shuaibah independent water and power project (IWPP) to various towns in the region, is expected to be made by the end of February.

A consortium of A Hak Pijpleidingen of the Netherlands and the local Al-Rashid Trading & Contracting Company and Saudi Services for Electro-Mechanical Works Company (SSEM) is the preferred bidder on the four pipeline installation packages. The preferred bidder on the contract to supply about 360 kilometres of carbon steel pipe with diameters of up to 80 inches is the local Aziz European Pipe Company (MEED 24:6:05).

The four pipeline construction packages cover: a new pipeline alongside the existing conveyor system between Shuaibah and Jeddah; a new pipeline between Shuaibah and the Quaiza reservoir system near Jeddah; a new pipeline between Shuaibah and Mina near Mecca; and a new pipeline running parallel to the existing transmission system between Mecca and Taif.

Invitation to bid documents are expected to be released by the summer for a similar project covering a water transmission system from the planned IWPP at Shuqaiq to cities in the southwest such as Abha, Jizan and Dhahran al-Janoub. The consultant on both schemes is Austria's ILF Consulting Engineers. Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC) is the client (MEED 29:4:05).
