Six Palestinians were killed and another 17 injured on 11 December during a large-scale Israeli military raid on targets in the Rafah refugee camp in the southern Gaza Strip. The Israeli Defence Force (IDF) entered the camp in an operation aimed at capturing two senior militants - one from Islamic Jihad and the other from Hamas - when their patrols came under heavy gunfire. IDF forces called in air support and helicopters fired at a number of targets on the ground. At least two houses were destroyed during the incursion, witnesses said. 'We condemn this dangerous escalation which is aimed at scuttling all efforts deployed to restore calm to the region,' said a top adviser to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, Nabil Abu Rudeina.
Earlier on 11 December, IDF soldiers arrested 11 Palestinians, including one woman, reported the local daily Haaretz (MEED 27:11:03).
