Six Palestinians, one American, killed by Israeli army

17 March 2003
Six Palestinians were killed and some 15 injured when Israeli troops entered the central Gazan refugee camp of Nusseirat on 17 March. The raid was part of continued operations against suspected militants in the Gaza Strip, and one of the targets was the house of an alleged member of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigade, which was blown up and its inhabitant, Mohammed Saafin, shot dead. Palestinian medical staff reported that a two-year old girl and 13-year old boy were also among the victims.

In the southern Gazan refugee camp of Rafah, a US peace protester was killed by an Israeli bulldozer as she and others attempted to stop the destruction of a Palestinian building. She was a member of a group called the International Solidarity Movement, which tries to prevent Israeli destruction of Palestinian homes. Washington has demanded a full investigation by Israel. The Israeli army said that the group's members place themselves in danger by entering combat zones.
