Sohar places long-lead items

05 May 2006

Sohar Aluminium has placed a host of long-lead item packages on its $2,400 million smelter project. The awards, primarily covering speciality equipment packages, follow the signings of the power island contract with France's Alstom in December and the site preparation package with the local/UK Carillion Alawi in early 2006 (MEED 27:1:06).

Site preparation works are well under way and first concrete is due to be poured in May for the potline. Project completion is set for the middle of 2008. The project calls for the construction of a 350,000-tonne-a-year potline and a 1,000-MW captive power plant. The US' Bechtel is the engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) contractor.
