A Greek registered tanker has been hijacked by Somali pirates around 350 nautical miles off the coast of Oman.

The vessel, named Irene, was carrying 266,000 tonnes of crude oil when taken on 9 February according to the European Navel Force Somalia (Eunavfor).

The ship’s owners, the Athens-based shipping company Enesel, reported the vessel’s 25 crew was taken hostage. The consists of seven Greek nationals, 17 Filipinos and one Georgian.

Eunavfor has reported that Somali pireates currently hold 29 vessels and around 681 hostages.
