Some 40 per cent of Palestinians over 15 find work

Around 40 per cent of Palestinians over the age of 15 were employed last year, according to the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics.

Their survey of the Palestinian labour force in 2007 showed a slight increase in participation in the workforce to 41.9 per cent.

The participation rate was 44 per cent in the West Bank, compared with 38 per cent in Gaza.

The services sector remains the main employer for Palestinian labour, with 35.8 per cent of employed people working in that sector.

The trade and restaurants sector was the second largest employer in the local market, with construction the biggest employer for Palestinians working in Israel and the settlements.

The average daily wage in 2007 reached NIS70 ($20) for employees in the West Bank and NIS58 in Gaza.
