State energy giant explores southeastern Illizi basin

The Alrar Ordovicien 2 well released 12,637 cubic metres an hour of gas under testing, according to Sonatrach.

Sonatrach has had success at three fields as a standalone operator, including the Illizi Basin, and at a further five fields as a consortium partner with international oil companies (IOCs).

Sonatrach is keen to push through new oil and gas developments, and spent more than $8bn in 2009 on infrastructure projects.

Algiers hopes to attract fresh interest in its undeveloped oil fields in a new international bid round in December (MEED 3:7:09).
