South Koreans win Iraq infrastructure work

Contract follows 2012 development deal

South Korea’s Hanwha Engineering & Construction has been awarded a $2.12bn contract for the construction of infrastructure at the Bismayah New City project.

Social infrastructure for the new city including over 300 schools and hospitals, together with police stations, fire stations, roads and water and sewage systems.

Hanwha Group secured the $8bn contract to develop Bismayah New City Project from the government of Iraq in 2012. It involves the construction of 100,000 residential units covering an area of 18.3 square kilometres.

When completed in 2019 it is expected to house over 600,000 residents.
