Overview

Iran’s Pars Oil & Gas Company is exploring and developing the offshore South Pars field, which borders with Qatar’s North Dome gas field in the Gulf, about 100km from the country’s southern coastline.

The South Pars/ North Dome gas field is 9,700km squared in size. South Pars sits within Iran’s territorial waters and the field is 3,700 sq km in size, with proven gas reserves of 350 trillion cubic metres, which is 6 per cent of the world total and half of Iran’s total reserves.

Once completed, phases 13 and 14 will produce 3 billion cubic feet (cft) per day of gas, which will be used as feedstock by the Persian LNG project. Gas from phase eight of the project will be liquefied at Bandar Tombak, 135km away. Because it can supply only 2 billion cubic feet of the required feed, another phase of the South Pars project will also supply Persian LNG. That additional 1 billion cft a day will come from phase 14 of the project (initially called phase 8A).

The offshore elements of phases 13 and 14 are each made up of 38 wells, four platforms and a number of pipelines.

The offshore work is split as follows:

Phase 13:

  • 38 Wells
  • 4 Platforms (Each 500 mcfd)
  • 2 32inch main pipelines (total length of 260km)
  • 2 4.5inch MEG injection pipelines
  • 2 18inch Infield pipelines (total length of 14km)

Phase 14:

  • 44 Wells
  • 4 Platforms (Each 500 mcfd)
  • 2 32inch main pipelines (total length of 260km)
  • 2 4.5inch MEG injection pipelines
  • 2 18inch Infield pipelines (total length of 18km)
