South rejoins Sudan government coalition

30 December 2007
Sudan’s governmental crisis has ended with the reappointment of southern rebels to the national government.

Sixteen members of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) were sworn in as ministers on 27 December.

The SPLM members had resigned from the government in October, alleging that the government continued to be dominated by its northern coalition partners.

“This signals the end of the crisis between the partners,” Mahjoub Fadul, a spokesman for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, told reporters following the reinvestiture of the returning ministers.
The national government was formed under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which brought an end to the world’s longest-running civil war in 2005.

“In the coming period [the coalition partners] will discuss the implementation of what has been decided and that includes implementation of the peace deal and rebuilding side by side all the war-torn areas,” said Fadul.
