Bids for the SPCC project are due to be returned by 7 May. Denmark's FL Smidth, which worked on SPCC's Bisha and Jizan plants, is among the companies to have been approached for the Al-Majardah project. A contract award is expected by mid-year.
The new plant will have capacity to produce 4,000 tonnes a day (t/d) of clinker. SPCC plans to carry out the greenfield project in two phases over three years. Phase 1 sees the installation of clinker grinding and packaging facilities at the new site by the end of 2004. Phase 2, which will be completed by the end of 2006, calls for the addition of a complete plant, including a 50-MW, diesel-run captive power plant, desalination and sewage treatment units and related facilities.
Until full completion, the new grinding facility will receive clinker feedstock from SPCC's 7,000-t/d Jizan facility. SPCC has appointed India's Holtecto act as consultant.
Other cement producers pursuing expansion schemes include Arab Cement Company, which plans to upgrade its Rabigh plant, Tabuk Cement Companyand Yanbu Cement Company.
