The local SSHwith the UK?s Hyder Consulting has been awarded a contract to study the upgrade of roads in the Kuwait Oil Company (KOC)operational area. The contract was placed by the US? Fluor Corporationacting on behalf of KOC in its role as project management services (PMS) provider to the state-owned upstream operator.

The scope of works for the 200-day study calls for the evaluation of the existing 350-kilometre-long road network in addition to carrying out a safety audit and traffic forecast. The study also involves studying the construction of new road networks to fields that KOC wishes to develop.

KOC?s existing network is in poor condition, with inadequate geometry and road profiles resulting in a very high accident rate. The study is being fast-tracked as up to 200 new KOC projects are understood to be on hold until the new network is assessed.

Once the study is complete in March next year, tenders are likely to be issued for the upgrade of the existing network as well as for the construction of new roads. The programme?s total cost is likely to exceed $100 million.
