StatoilHydro makes Algerian gas discovery

28 August 2008
Norway’s StatoilHydro has made its second gas discovery in a month in the Hassi Mouina area in the south of Algeria.

The dry gas discovery was made in the Tinerkouk 2 well, within the Hassi Mouina perimeter which is operated by StatoilHydro in partnership with state energy company Sonatrach.

StatoilHydro did not give a volume estimate for the discovery but says it is the sixth positive well it has drilled in the area. Its last discovery earlier this month produced more than 9,000 cubic metres an hour of gas (MEED 6:8:08).

Over the past 12 months, Sonatrach has made nine significant oil and gas discoveries, of which six have been made in partnership with other energy companies.

StatoilHydro has a 75 per cent interest in the Hassi Mouina licence with Sonatrach holding the 25 per cent balance.
