30 November 2001

The new plant will be tendered in two packages, the first of which entails the construction of a 1.65 million-tonne-a-year (t/y) direct reduction iron plant. The second package covers construction of a 1.5 million-t/y slab and lime-calcining plant. Hormozgan says that two companies were prequalified to bid for both packages.

The contracts will be let on a turnkey basis, with bidders required to submit financing proposals.

It is understood that Germany's SMS Demag, Austria's Voest AlpineIndustrieanlagenbauand Italy's Danieli & Companyare among the companies that purchased tender documents. Other prospective bidders include Japanese and Iranian contractors.

Industry sources say that at least one company was prequalified on the condition that it team up with a second contractor to compensate for lack of experience in the steel industry.

The award of a contract for the construction of a 4 million-t/y pelletising plant in Sirjan is expected to be delayed until early next year. Seven companies submitted bids to the National Iranian Steel Company (Nisco) for the estimated $150 million-200 million contract. Japan's Kobe Steelwas ranked first in the evaluation of both technical and financial bids, closely followed by Voest Alpine. The other bidders are Danieli and three local companies, among them Namvaran(MEED 13:7:01).
