Qatar General Electricity & Water Corporation (Kahramaa) has issued for bid the first package on phase 5 of the Qatar transmission project. Covering the turnkey construction of five new substations, contractors have been invited to bid by 9 November for the package, which is the largest on the estimated $400 million project (see Tenders, MEED 27:9:03).

The new substations to be built under the contract are:

a 220/66/11-kV substation known as Doha central

a 132/66/11-kV substation at Maither central

a 132/66/11-kV substation at Duhail

a 66/11-kV substation at the vegetable market

The successful bidder will also modify and refurbish the existing Gharafa 132-kV substation and make modifications to the existing monitoring and control centres.

In addition to the substation works, the phase 5 programme involves considerable cabling work, involving the installation of 220-kV, 132-kV and 66-kV cable.

The consultant for the phase 5 programme is the UK's PB Power.
