Suicide bomb kills five in Iraq

28 October 2003
A suicide bomber killed five Iraqi civilians on 28 October, said local police in Fallujah. Officers at the scene said that a man drove a small car towards a police station in the town and detonated the bomb about 100 metres from the building, outside a local school. Witnesses say that school children are among the dead. Fallujah, which is situated in the predominantly Sunni area north of Baghdad, continues to be the scene of regular attacks against coalition troops.

In a further setback, the deputy mayor of Baghdad, Faris al-Assam, was shot dead on 26 October in what is believed to be a hit-and-run incident near his home in the capital.
