Suicide bombing hits Kfar Sava

24 April 2003
At least one Israeli died and many more were injured in a suicide bombing in the Israeli town of Kfar Sava on 24 April. Police said that the bomber detonated his explosives when stopped at the entrance to the town's train station, at about 0700 local time. Israelis said that the number of fatalities would have been far higher had the bomber succeeded in entering the station, where the morning rush hour was beginning. It was the first suicide bombing for more than a month, the last injuring dozens of people in Netanya in March. A spokesman for Prime Minister Ariel Sharon described the Kfar Sava attack as 'another attempt to instil fear in the heart of Israelis'. Just hours earlier, the prospects for movement on the peace process took a step forward when Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat and his new Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas reached a compromise over the composition of Abbas's cabinet - paving the way for the publication of the much-vaunted peace roadmap by the quartet of Russia, the EU, the US and the UN.
