Omani head of state fires 12 ministers following protests
Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said has sacked 12 government ministers in a radical cabinet reshuffle, including Economy Minister Ahmed Makki, who has been a key focus of anger for protesters in the country.
Makki is the most high-profile figure to lose his job in the reshuffle. The port town of Sohar has become a focal point of the national uprising in Oman after police opened fire on crowds gathered at a roundabout in February.
The latest reshuffle follows several previous changes to the government in an attempt to quell the protests. The Sultan removed two cabinet ministers only several days before the most recent reshuffle.
