Sultan Qaboos returns to Oman

The sultan walks off his plane after successful medical treatment

Oman’s Sultan Qaboos bin Said al-Said returned home to Oman on 23 March.

“His Majesty Sultan Qaboos returned to the dear homeland yesterday evening enjoying full health and wellbeing after… successful completion of the medical programme,” said an official statement.

He walked unaided from the plane to a waiting helicopter.

The sultan spent eight months in Germany receiving medical treatment, and made few public appearances during this period.

Celebrations in Oman continue. The majority of Omanis remember no other leader, and fears over the future were growing.

The return should calm speculation over the 74-year-old ruler’s succession plans. He has no sons or brothers.

Sultan Qaboos has ruled Oman since a bloodless coup against his father in 1970, and is credited with turning Oman into a modern nation.
